This is one of those annoying tasks that no one thinks about doing ahead of time, but is crucial, especially if you want the TV and internet working the day you move in. Call now to hook up your utilities! Make sure to get the gas and electric changed into your name. Generally, in the Greater Harrisburg Area you’ll call PPL for the electricity and UGI for gas service. More rural areas in Cumberland, Dauphin or Perry counties may use other providers. Make sure to check with your Realtor for the specific companies in the area where your new home is located.
You’ll also want to call your TV and internet provider asap as well as the trash.
If you’re selling a single family house you’ll need to arrange for the water and sewer bill to be taken out of your name. Have all of the utilities stop on the day of closing. If you have a security system, schedule it to be shut off the day before closing. Don’t forget to cancel your homeowner’s insurance! (We recommend keeping it through the day of settlement in case there are any last minute hiccups).
If you’re moving to a new home, transfer the utilities to your new home instead of canceling them.
